“Advent whispers peace into the chaos, inviting us to find tranquility not in the absence of turmoil but in the presence of a peace that surpasses all understanding.”

— Jeremi Richardson.

As the world spins in a frenzied dance of twinkling lights and festive melodies, a quiet corner exists — a sanctuary of solitude and reflection.

In the hushed moments before dawn, as the world slumbers, I find myself enveloped in a symphony of solitude. The twinkling lights cast gentle shadows, and the silent night becomes a canvas for tearful prayers. Advent is not always a season of exuberant joy; sometimes, it is a tear-streaked path where our hearts ache in the echo of unspoken pain.

As we navigate the maze of festive gatherings, the weight of silence can be profound. The carols may sound distant for those carrying heavy burdens, and the laughter may ring hollow. It is okay to acknowledge the tears, the unspoken fears, and the ache that refuses to be concealed beneath a festive facade. In this silence, you are not alone.

For those of you who find yourself there, hear this prayer:
Heavenly Father, in the quiet corridors of our hearts, we lay bare our tears, fears, and unspoken pain. As the world dons its festive attire, we find solace in the truth that you are the God who sees. In our tearful Advent prayer, we surrender our burdens and embrace the peace that transcends understanding.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7 (New International Version.)

Amid the silent struggles, let us remember that we are not solitary wanderers. There is a comforting companionship in the tearful prayers offered in unison. Advent’s flickering candles illuminate the path and symbolize the shared warmth of kindred spirits finding solace in the silence. Hope, like a delicate ember, flickers in the quiet moments. It is not the raucous cheer that drowns out sorrow but the gentle assurance that a dawn of peace awaits even in the tearful night. Advent beckons us to release our burdens, trusting that the embrace of hope is stronger than the weight of our tears.

Friends, it is okay to cry. As we traverse the tearful terrain of Advent, may our tears be sacred offerings, watering the soil where seeds of peace take root. In our solitude, let us find a tearful amen — a whispered acknowledgment that, even in the quietest moments, we are held in the embrace of a peace that surpasses all understanding.

I see you today, and I weep with you. Your tears are seen, your pain is known, and your heart is held. In the tapestry of silent struggles, may you discover the threads of hope that bind us together in shared humanity. You are not alone, and I pray in the stillness of the room where you read these words that you feel his whispers of peace today.

“O Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, ’Til He appeared, and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.¹”

  1. Adam, Adolphe, and John Sullivan Dwight. “O Holy Night.” 1847.
