The Fragility of God’s Stability

Faith is often described as a rock, an anchor, or a firm foundation — something unshakable, steady, and reliable. We sing about standing on the promises of God, leaning on the everlasting arms, and trusting that He is our refuge and strength. But if we’re honest, there are times when God’s stability feels fragile, like a flickering candle in the wind rather than an unmovable fortress.

We don’t often say it out loud, but trusting God is hard.

Not because He isn’t trustworthy, but because trust requires us to let go of our need for control. Trust demands that we release our grip on certainty and lean into something — Someone — we cannot fully see. And when life shakes us, when prayers seem unanswered, when suffering lingers longer than we think we can bear, God’s stability can feel like it’s slipping through our fingers.

A Picture of Fragile Stability

Imagine standing on a rope bridge suspended over a deep canyon. The planks beneath your feet are firm, but they creak under your weight. The wind howls, causing the bridge to sway. Every logical part of you questions whether it will hold. You grip the ropes tightly, heart pounding, knees trembling.

God is that bridge. Stable, yet terrifying. Secure, yet requiring faith with every step.
